Ed Freeman...A Hero's Passing

You're a 19 year old kid. You're critically wounded, and dying in the jungle in the Ia Drang Valley , 11-14-1965, LZ X-ray, Vietnam . Your infantry unit is out numbered 8-1, and the enemy fire is so intense, from 100 or 200 yards away, that your own Infantry Commander has ordered the MediVac helicopters to stop coming in.
You're lying there, listening to the enemy machine guns, and you know you're not getting out. Your family is half way around the world, and you'll never see them again. As the world starts to fade in and out, you know this is the day.
Then, over the machine gun noise, you faintly hear that sound of a helicopter, and you look up to see an unarmed Huey, but it doesn't seem real, because no Medi-Vac markings are on it.
Ed Freeman is coming for you. He's not Medi-Vac, so it's not his job, but he's flying his Huey down into the machine gun fire, after the Medi-Vacs were ordered not to come in.
But he's coming anyway.
And he drops it in, and sits there in a hail of machine gun fire, as they load 2 or 3 of you on board.
Then he flies you up and out through the gunfire, to the doctors and nurses.
And he kept coming back again and again, 13 more times and took about 30 of you and your buddies out, who would never have gotten out.
Medal of Honor Recipient, Ed Freeman, died on Wednesday, March 25th, 2009 at the age of 80 in Boise, ID. May God rest his soul.
I'll bet you didn't hear anything at all from the media about this hero's passing, but we sure were told a lot about some entertainer who died of a drug overdose
THE CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR WINNER ED FREEMAN!

What Are You Waiting For?

How many times have you ever seen something that invoked an emotional response that I don't want that to happen to me, or I should really do that, or I don't want that to happen to me. It happens to all of us, about getting "in shape", losing weight, learning to use a firearm, shopping for better car insurance. We experience a stimulus and respond. We dig through our summer wardrobe to find that last years shorts are too tight. We get that monthly bill and think I can do better. We watch a video, read a new clipping, or worse have someone we care about fall victim to violence. I should really take some 'self defense lessons' or get a gun, etc...Unlike taking some time to loose some weight, or research how to save a buck violence is something none of us can afford. You can bury your head in the sand, you can put it off but that doesn't make you safer.
Look deeper and how many times have we walked through an area where are senses were heightened, we see an unfamiliar face coming towards us, the uncomfortable feeling starts, we're not sure what to do, the heart starts beating faster, our body 'perceives' some type of threat, it picks up and we feel 'anxious'. This approaching figure 'looks shady' what else are you thinking? We hope nothing happens to us, we pray, or we tell ourselves we'll be fine. It happens to all of us it's called fear. Do you understand fear, the power of it and that it can be your friend if you have the tools to manage it. Come and learn more about fear, fear management, and have some fun doing it. What are you waiting for?
View Gavin Debecker world famous author on fear.
Is money an issue? For about the price of a nice meal out, two oil changes, or a pair of pants you can learn to be safer. It is time? I can teach you to be safer in an afternoon. Too old? Injuries? I'm too this too that. I've heard it all. I've had people attend a seminar with back injuries just wanting to 'observe' and had them participate the whole event without an issue and thank me. I've taught a person who lost their leg in a climbing accident. What's your excuse?
Let me show you what you can do with a little time an effort Saturday, July 18th, 10am - 2pm at CrossFit South Philly.

Finally! Found a home...
306 Westtown Road in West Chester, PA will be the home to Providence Combatives. For those keeping up with me know I have been searching for the right place to offer training on a regular basis. I found it in partnering with CrossFit West Chester.
It looks like a July 1st opening date and I am so excited! I am working with some really cool people that share my passion about training. Being involved with Blauer Tactical and being there when Coach Blauer opened his new training center in Virginia Beach, VA I knew that is what I wanted to bring to the people I trained, on a much much smaller scale of course:) But what a cool model, the best of both worlds under one roof! If yov've never been there or at least seen pictures its a great place with a cool eletric energy there that just makes you feel like you are a part of something great. I hope to bring some of that energy into this location.
I will continue to bring the Personal Defense Readiness Program around the state by doing seminars but now will be able to offer the oppurtunity to those interested in contiuous training including Ground Fighting, Weapons Protection, and more!
I have also added another High Gear suit to my equipment list which will allow people to really experience the next level in realistic training. Interested in putting your skills to the test? Give me a call 484-955-9879.

When Can I See You Again?...

What if the answer was never? Everyone in the world would act differently if we knew that today when we said goodbye to our loved ones, our children that we would never see them again. Why? becuase today was the day our child was abducted or today we had to fight for our life. Professional boxers and mixed martial artists prepare weeks to months in advance for their next match. How are you preparing yourself and your loved ones for their next fight? It's not being paranoid it's being prepared. Let's not wait. Check you calendars and lets get together and train...
Sunday, April 26th 2009 from 10am-2pm I'll be at CrossFit South Philly for a Fundamental Personal Defense Readiness Seminar.
Some people don't realize that no two seminars are the same! I have just returned from an Advanced Certification with Blauer Tactical Systems that covered Weapon Protection. I continue my training so that you can continue yours. Some people think that one seminar is enough. In four hours I made you more dangerous to the Bad Guy's but how much more dangerous could you be with another four hours?
CrossFit South Philly is located at 818 Alter St. Philadelphia, PA 19147

What are you doing Saturday, April 25th (2:30-8:30PM)? I'll be at the Downingtown Borough Hall Building (Annex Meeting Rm. 4 W. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown, PA next to the Downingtown police station) teaching a Bully Proof Your Child course. This workshop is a dual track course where kids will be coached in conflict and fear management tools, how to Detect, Defuse and Defend, their natural defense mechanism and how to convert that to action. Parents will be focused on How To Coach Your Child through the traumatic results of being bullied, How to Avoid being bullied and How you can reinforce what will be taught in their training. We will also discuss the “Zero Tolerance” Policy that most school systems have implemented and how this policy can be a false security blanket. This course will NOT be skirting around the issues that most schools and other “non-violent” systems tend to avoid. This will be an eye opener for everyone!
Also on Saturday, May 16th from (3:30-7:30PM) I am offering my Child Assault Prevention Education course at the East Caln Twp. Building.

PDR seminar Take Two: CrossFit Delaware Valley
Seminar Photo(s)
Thanks to Rob Miller and his gang for having me back at CrossFit Delaware Valley!
I like to think I made 6 new friends this past Saturday. I can't say enough how fun and rewarding it is to meet new people or reconnect and share this great system of how to better protect yourself.
Everyone worked the drills hard, asked great questions and seemed switched on to the information. Zach, one of Rob's trainers, had been to the previous seminar at CFDV and had some great insight. One thing that stood out for me was to watch, how after one exposure, how Zach was able to jump in and out of the drills and self correct. I know humbly that a little of that is me but more so a testament to the S.P.E.A.R. system, Tony Blauer, and the Personal Defense Readiness Program that I am honored to be a part of.
Thanks again to all and looking forawrd to visiting again soon!

New Services Offered
I am excited to bring some new services to everyone this year. Firearms Training and (in my humble opinion) the BEST conditioning program available.
Currently I teach firarms at my current employ focusing on training new corrections staff in the basic use of firearms. I started my firearms training by attending a National Rifle Association Law Enforcement Firearms Instructor Course. My passion for training and wanting to do the best for the people I serve motivates me to continue with the student mindset and research various gun disciplines. There are many gun owners out there but some who are afraid to own a gun or don't have the proper training to use a firearm to it's fullest capacity. this has lead me to begin to share what I have learned in firearms trainig to both Law Enforcement and peace loving, law abiding citizens. Currently I will begin with offering Basic Pistol, Basic Shotgun (hands down the best and most misunderstood home defense weaon today!), Personal Protection in the Home, and Home Firearm Safety.
The Conditioning course is something that is somewhat selfish but applicable to the personal protection, self imporvement, self empowerment journey. In the PDR program a principle of 'Capacity vs. Potential' is introduced. Plainly stated, "Capacity is what you bring to the fight right now! Focusing on 'potential' moves you (and removes you) from the 'here & now' where we must be to perform optimally. Potential is either in the past or future, capacity is what you bring to the fight NOW. Example (I used to be a great wrestler in high school. If I work out more I will be in better shape)." - taken from BTS PDR presentation
So now if you accept I am only as good as I am right now, if I have any integrity don't I owe it to myself to make myself better. How can we do that? One way that is very simple is through conditioning. Not bodybuilding or training for an Iron Man Triatholon but true, fitness for the realitites of everyday life which include basic safety. Not just death matches but tripping and falling or picking something up and putting it on a shelf or protecting yourself. If all things are equal between you and the bad guy but the bad guy is stronger who has the advantage. Now I often discuss in the self-defense seminars how not to let the numbers beat you and not to give your opponenet any unproven attributes. This is where skill, knowledge, tactics, and strategy come in. But take away all the benefits of overall health like feeling better and not being sick as much which relays into an overall better quality of life what is the argument against. Not to mention the personal protection component of looking in shape makes you a harder target, the confidence that comes with the right program sends out signals to tell the bad guys to stay away.
In the 1920's a fitness advocate by the name of Earle E. Liederman published a number of books and articles on what was then referred to as physical culture. Liederman wrote that the average man should be able to do the following:
· Be able to swim at least half a mile or more;
· Be able to run at top speed two hundred yards or more;
· Be able to jump over obstacles higher than your waist;
· Be in condition to pull your body upward by the strength of your arms, until
your chin touches your hands, at least 15 to 20 times;
· Be able to dip between parallel bars or between two chairs at least 25 times or
more.
“If a man can accomplish these things,' Liederman said, 'he need have no fear concerning the safety of his life should he be forced into an emergency from which he alone may be able to save himself.”
The CrossFit program is something I have long reserached and have found it to be the most effcient, safest, way to achieve dramatic and significant changes in work capacity, body composition, endurance, flexability, strength, stamina, cardio vascular capactiy, power, balance, agility, and accuracy. I ahve been following this program for myself and at soon to be 39 I can honestly say I am in the best condition of my entire life. If you want to improve your 'Honest' ability to be able to defend yourself, your loved ones better, want better health and an overall imporved quality of life contact me. I will be offering seminars and workshops in the area on the foundational movements of the CrossFit program. Most of which you can do in your garage or basement with some basic instruction.
If you have any interest in hosting or attending any of the new or my established courses email me at steve@providencecombatives.com or call 484-955-9879.

A Day With the Chester County Park Rangers

Yesterday was spent with the Chester County, PA Park Rangers and introducing them to the S.P.E.A.R. SYSTEM™ (Spontaneous Protection Enabling Accelerated Response). When the average person thinks of Law Enforcement most people think of their local and state police forces. Working in Corrections I often find that I encouter the same scope of duties but framed in a different enviroment or with differing objectives so when attending law enforcement focused trainings I often feel out on the fringe and have to adapt what is being taught to my duties and objecitves. Park Rangers are often faced with the same duties in their mission, keeping the peace and enforcing the rules and laws pertaining to their jurisdiction, serving the public expectation to keep their parks safe and doing it all with a smile. With 9 full time rangers in attendance it was a testament to how adaptable the S.P.E.A.R. SYSTEM™ is. For those with some exposure to any of my training courses you are familiar with the 3-Step Tackle Drill. Instead of extracting a subject from a car the scenario became pulling somone from a park bench or seated from thier tackle box, dealing with improvised weapons like a fishing poll. Everyone did a great job and gave a super effort!
I would like to thank: Rob Lewis the Regional Park Superintendent Chester County Parks & Recreation Department for having me, Erik Keehn & Shawn Tucker for helping out and being good bad guys, Tony Blauer President and CEO of Blauer Tactical Systems and founder of the S.P.E.A.R. SYSTEM™, and lastly to the Park Rangers of Chester County, PA.
