Hello to everyone and I hope you are having a great holiday season. Things have been extremly slow for me with the Fall/Winter due to injuries then illness.
I am happy to say that I am off the bench and planning the rest of the Winter and New Year events which will include some new courses and maybe some joint training events that are in the works. Some of these to include advanced courses like Ground Fighting and various Firearms specific training to name a few.

Personal Defense Readiness Seminar

The next PDR oppurtunity will be Saturday September 13th, 10am-2pm at the CrossFit Delaware Valley in Glenolden, PA.

The class covers material from Tony Blauer's SPEAR system (seen on the CrossFit main page from time-to-time). Visit this link for more info.

Here are some video links to Tony Blauer during seminars. Watch these to get an idea of the material covered. Also, I've included the 'blurb' from the website.

Link 1 - Bridging to your next move

Link 2 - Why startle flinch?

Link 3 - Elevator Safety

Tony Blauer's S.P.E.A.R System is the first genetically and behaviorally inspired self-defense system of its kind.By fully integrating the body's reflexive and instinctive survival mechanisms, the Personal Defense Readiness system becomes the easiest, most natural, and thus most-efficacious method of self-defense.Regardless of prior experience, this course will increase your chances of personal protection significantly.

BTS / PDR Combatives Camp USA!

Basically, what comes to mind right now is just WOW! The camp was not only the biggest, it was the best by far, and the BTS Training Center is the most amazing facility I have ever seen! The weekend started Friday night for the 135 in attendance with an inspirational talk from CrossFit founder Greg Glassman (CrossFit.com) on why CrossFit and S.P.E.A.R. work so well together. That was followed on Saturday morning by the largest workout I have ever been apart of when Brendan Gilliam (https://webmail.montcopa.org/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.crossfitnsc.com/brendan.html) took over 100 attendees through a CrossFit workout, it was just an awesome sight.

Tony Blauer and his team then took the camp through several hours of concepts and drills. The camp was made up of roughly equal parts military, law enforcement, and general public. One of the most impressive aspects of the training was the universal applicability of the S.P.E.A.R. System for each group regardless of experience level. Coach Blauer's ability to seamlessly relate the material to each group is just amazing, and a tribute to the system he created.

Saturday culminated with an excellent MMA class by UFC fighter Joe Lauzon, who was also universally praised for his teaching prowess.Sunday began with an intense Combat Conditioning workout that blended CrossFit concepts with the S.P.E.A.R. Systems behaviorally based drills.

The remainder of day consisted of training drills including the X-Axis Shin Kick and Saving Private Ryan drills plus an overview of the importance of mindset by Coach Blauer.

This year's camp ended as always with a Ballistic Micro Fight demo by members of the PDR Team and S.P.E.A.R. Instructors showing just how realistic training can get in High Gear.Everyone, I spoke to at the end of the weekend planned on attending more training ASAP, several inquired about joining the PDR Team so they could start teaching the general public, and many of the LEO's and military personnel in attendance where interested in attending the S.P.E.A.R. Instructor course to be held at the WTC in October, and/or sponsoring courses within their agencies or groups.

Congratulations to Tony, Jesse and the whole team. Here is a link to some photos from the camp:

Camp and Other Training Feedback:

"I appreciate everything BTS has done for my mom and I. I really look up to everybody on the team. I couldn't of asked for better opportunities to be able to grow as a instructor, as well as a person. And I thank you for that!"
- Jake Jacoby- The Realistic Female Self Defense Company

"Tony,Just wanted to say thanks, I do Crossfit and have really come to enjoy the vids they have up re the SPEAR system and your instruction. I have 9 yr old and 11 yr old daughters and I have slowly started introducing them to concepts in self defense. They will actually sit and watch your instruction vids (I introduced them to it with the 'Open hand/Closed hand' after that they were hooked). The girls play volleyball and swim and fitting in a martial arts class of any variety would be tough so I do what I can to get the concept of self defense into their awareness of the world. The other day after watching one of the vids (I believe it was 'Intro to the Spear') my 11 year old (who is 5'4") wanted me to try and swing on her. I was reluctant so we are just standing there talking about it and I reached quickly for her collar. . .her head flinched, her hands came up, blocked . . . she looked a me and said, "Wow, that was really cool". Thanks for that, and for helping her start down the road. And I could have talked to her about mindset for weeks and it doesn't make near the impact as when she listens to your instruction (ahhh the lesson of being a parent).Cheers, keep up the great work."
- Corey -

"This may sound very cliche, but I think the PDR training is the missing piece of the puzzle in my martial arts training. I have over 16 years of martial arts experience, and at 4th Dan I found myself getting complacent with my techniques and training. The PDR and S.P.E.A.R. system has opened up a whole new world of possibilities for me now. I now understand how this system can compliment any martial arts style, and no longer feel guilty for taking something outside my martial art. It can only enhance my training. I really appreciate the intellectual level at which the training is delivered. I work as a Kinesiologist and already understand in great depth the body's physiological response to fear, but this course has now taught me much more about the psychological component. And listening to the "Mental Edge Package" on the way to work this morning has motivated me to research this further. Thanks!"
- Kumar Bandyo, B.Sc.Kinesiologist, RK

Vehicle Tactics Course

This past Saturday was HOT! 95 degrees, no wind, high humidity but that didn't stop anyone at the Hellertown Sportsman Association or Bob Desrosier with Argive Defense.

I have attended Bob's course for Center Axis Relock and it was great. The course Saturday was on Vehicle Tactics. Besides the weather the course was well run and an eye opener at the very least! Bob instructed the attendees on the deficiencies on a vehicle as a weapons platform, moving from the vehicle and engaging targets, engaging from inside the vehicle and more. Training in a variety of skill sets in never ceases to amaze me how emphasis on the simple things makes all the difference. As an example we were run through several drills just exiting and drawing dry fire.
I recommend attending one of Argive Defense's courses especially the vehicle tactics class for LEO or civilian. If your serious about personal safety and utilize a firearm as a personal defense tool you have to address real world scenarios and the issues that they present, Argive Defense does that and more. Firearms Training Op

January of this year I attended my first Center Axis Relock training course put on by CAR Instructor Bob Desrosier. The course was GREAT and I have been waiting for the next event to further sharpen my shooting skills and its HERE!

June 7th Argive Defense is hosting another course based on the CAR system of shooting. This course will center around vehicle tactics and is open to the public. Go here for more details: (www.ArgiveDefense.com)

The CAR system of shooting was developed by a guy named Paul Castle. I am a NRA certified Law Enforcement Firearms instructor for Handgun & Shotgun and met Mr. Castle at a training workshop at a Corrections based training weekend called the OLETC Mock Riot. As an instructor I have seen lots of "trick" shooting high speed stuff. All that stuff is great to watch and try but when the day is over you have to be able to convey those skills to the end user in a minimal amount of time. The CAR system does just that. It enables a person a strong stable platform to shoot from with minimal recoil and delivering accurate center mass shots at close range without conventionally aiming the weapon and providing a fool proof weapon retention aspect as well.

Check back to see how the vehicle class goes and maybe I'll have some cool pics or vid of the event.

For more information on Paul Castle or the CAR system you can Google him or go to www.sabretactical.com or www.ipdsystems.com

Why "Providence" Combatives?

I chose the name Providence Combatives to represent how I feel our creator, through intelligent design, imbued us with natural protective mechanisms and the definition of both words. In this post I'll attempt to explain my feelings about the meaning behind the first part of the name.

For example intuition or the sixth sense. We put all kinds of labels to it, yet there is no real proven scientific explanation for it. (I recommend Gavin DeBecker's books, in particular "The Gift of Fear", on learning more about the awesome protective mechanism the intuition really can be when we learn how to use it.) There have been some psychological explanations for what the intuition is, how our subconscious calls on past experiences learned, to then frame potential hazard.

The startle/flinch response is another genetically wired physiological response to danger. As stated by Blauer Tactical systems research, depending on how aggressive, how sudden or fast, and the proximity of a stimulus will elicit a certain type of physiological response using our arms or legs to cringe in to protect the most vital part of our physical selves to survive, our brain. View an act of someone being on the ground and kicked in the stomach and you will notice they curl up and protect their head even though the attacks are directed at the body. No one has to be told to curl into a fetal position we just do it, naturally. A slower stimulus may bring about a response of pushing danger away. Visualize for a moment unknowingly walking through a spider web. What do most people do move away from the direction we felt the web as it stuck to our face, hands coming up to get it off of us. How do you walk through a room? Head first, backwards, or with hands out to push away any danger to our command center, our brain.

Understanding that we have been endowed with a natural alarm system (intuition), and physical protection (startle flinch response) is a huge leap from complex motor skill based self defense system. Knowing this should be a litmus test for choosing a self defense program, firearms training, or any physical skill set.

Whether you believe in nature or creation, how empowering to know you have these protective measures hard wired into your system?

The second meaning is "The act of providing or preparing for the future use or application, a making ready, a preparation." I have tried to adopt the overkill mentality and applied it to my teaching philosophy and my personal training. To do more then what the bad guy is doing, in planning, fitness,...whatever. To be prepared for the worst. It's like the story about the ant, one stores away his food preparing for winter while the other plays the summer away. Not everyone is born with this or learns it which is why we as a society have become dependant on the system to protect us, to provide. When it comes to your safety the police are reactive not proactive they just can't be. Do you really want to trust your safety to someone else in the heat of the moment when the danger is bearing down on you it's to late to think about it. You have to store your nuts NOW! Cause you never know when old man winter(the bad guy or danger) is gonna show up at your door.

What investment have you made to prepare for the future of your safety?

Look for my next posting on "Combatives"
